A Study on the Independent Housing Experiences of People with Mental Disorder
Seo Gyu-Dong

Abstract
This is a qualitative research on what mentally disordered people experience in the process of changing their environment from long term hospitalization at mental hospital and asylum to independent housing in community. Research participants were selected from people with experience of at least 2 years of hospitalization at mental hospital or asylum among mentally disordered people having started independent housing for 6 months or longer. In-depth interview was continued for about 3 months from December 10th, 2007 to March 10th, 2008. 12 people participated in the research. Collected data were analyzed by utilizing Colaizzi method among phenomenological research methodologies. As a result of the analysis, we could intuitively know that ¡¯self-empowerment journey¡¯ is the essential theme. Because this essential theme is an analysis of experience including the moment before starting independent housing and current living condition, we could make a classification of 6 theme clusters, that is , , , , and by advancing process of experience. Throughout this journey of growing ¡¯one¡¯s own ability¡¯, independent housing is the place providing participants with the new family members as well as giving peace and comforts with friendly relationship. Based on the research result, we could propose a direction on social welfare practice. Mental health institutions have more interests on independent housing for hospitalized mentally disordered people and develop various educational programs related with the housing so that patients can prepare their independent life with hope. Preparation of support policies for expansion of independent housing, operation of semi independent housing where staffs are not assigned, and providing with the case managers for independent housing support are necessary conditions.
